Our approach

Your child's emotional wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.

At the heart of our practice we want to foster confidence, creativity and compassion in our children.  We achieve this by providing a stimulating outdoor environment, combined with projects grounded in children’s interests and by having a team of empathetic adults who act as role models.

An important aspect of our approach includes the use of Non-Violent Communication (NVC) and Thomas Gordon's Parent Effectiveness Training (PET). If you are considering enrolling your child in our school, we would encourage you to familiarise yourself with these.

Our learning principles

Central to our approach to teaching are two key learning principles:

1. Learning is a process not an outcome. We do not participate in any formal tests, but rather observe the children and find ways to support them in continuous learning.

Our experience has taught us that compulsion, testing, punishments or rewards are not good vehicles for learning. Instead we focus on developing our community through:

  • Building close relationships with our children
  • Having clear structures to the day
  • Sharing responsibilities
  • Using a language of feelings and needs
  • Having high expectations of how we all behave towards each other

2. Curiosity is the foundation of learning. Children learn in a playful way through following their curiosity, problem solving and creating their own projects. We aim to inspire curiosity with stories and activities that explore the woodland and ignite interest in the issues affecting the wider world.

Our community

We are passionate about being part of a community with you.

Through our website, social media channels and regular communication with parents and care-givers, our aim is to support one another in raising children in a compassionate way so that they become self-confident, creative, and motivated adults who care about the natural world.
